BPAID™ In Action

B = Break the cycle of madness – Stop doing dumb stuff

P = Purpose – Redefine the WHY

A = Aspire – Reimagine the future

I = Inspire – Take people on the journey

D = Deliver – Make it happen

Breaking the cycle of madness. Provides a transparent view of the real state of your organisation and illuminates those issues lurking in the shadows. This provides a holistic view of your business capabilities and enables a better mechanism for prioritisation of effort.

Purpose. The necessity of clarity of purpose is well understood. However, the reality of what we say and what we do can be subtly or significantly different. Rigorous review of purpose and the capabilities required to achieve it creates the foundation on which future actions can be built. Here sensemaking may be useful to identity gaps between what we think and what we know.

Aspire. Painting a picture of what the future would be if we achieve our purpose is what defines us. This is not a corporate vision or mission statement but an articulation of the impacts and outcomes that could be created. The art of possibilities drives invention and innovation and realises greater opportunities than simply attempting a linear movement based on current versus future state gap analysis.

Inspire. Validating our aspirations with our employees, customers and stakeholders and addressing differences in expectations early ensures that action will be valuable and eases the change process. Engaging early and often allows us to rapidly adapt in complex environments.

Deliver. Whatever specific approach, process, tools or structure is used for delivery there is always room for improvement. If we have broken the cycle of madness and stripped out the dumb stuff, engaged our people with our purpose, aspirations to inspire them, we create both a sense of urgency and have a rigorous focus. It is then a process of executing as effectively and quickly as possible. Boyd’s OODA loop (Observe, Orient, Decide, Act [&repeat]) is again a proven set of principles that can be incorporated into any delivery model to accelerate delivery.

BPAID™ Advantage

Whilst these principles can be applied at enterprise scale and completely transform an organisation, they can also be used tactically. There is no special training required for your people. Activities can be cost or time boxed. Every dumb thing or bad habit you break saves you cost. The act of allowing employee or stakeholder to be involved increases engagement and momentum. BPAID is not a philosophy. It works.

Applying these principles with my own IT team, delivery went from 3 projects (2 of which needed to be stopped) in the first six months to multiple concurrent projects (15+ projects delivered) including a full infrastructure refresh in 18months and a $1million operational cost saving.

BPAID™ In Practice

BPAIDis designed to assist executive leaders, chief information / technology officers, strategic thinkers and those responsible for delivering change to achieve tangible results whilst navigating disruption and building resilience in a volatile, uncertain, complex and ambiguous world.

It can be used to augment, or supplement existing change / project activities thereby saving costs, errors and time or used more strategically for enterprise transformation.

Strategic use considers the potential of new models, new technology, internet of things, artificial intelligence, machine learning, blockchain et al to leapfrog legacy solutions and traditional thinking.
